“ With these new and wonderful inventions there is a wisdom and awareness of the long term impacts of these new technologies that should be carefully considered as children's exposure increases. It is my choice to Wait Until 8th. But my passion for this topic runs equally deep in providing an opportunity for open community dialogue on these issues and resources for ALL in Bedford. From those with younger children who DO choose to use smart phones to have resources available for making these devices as safe as possible and for children as they age to explore how to incrementally engage with these devices and apps in a guided and semi-independent manner."

The mission of Bedford Promise is to unite our community through the promise of delaying the purchase of a smartphone for children until at least eighth grade, thereby making smartphones the exception, not the rule.
Bedford Promise is modeled after the Concord Promise and Wait Until 8th movement, whose stated mission is to:
Empower parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over the kids having a smartphone.
We believe that Bedford Promise will decrease pressure by creating an extensive network of community support among parents who promise to delay the purchase of a smartphone until at least eighth grade.
It’s worth pointing out that this promise is for smartphones only. Bedford Promise supports the purchase of a basic phone or watch, even one with text capabilities. For a list of Bedford Promise recommended devices, please visit our Resources Page. These devices avoid many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone, while still allowing families and friends to communicate with each other.
